The Benefits of Martial Arts for Children

There are lots of reasons martial arts might be a good match for your child, even if they learn and think differently. Here are nine benefits.

They focus on individual growth, not on team competition.

Many children struggle with the pressure of competing with other children. But in martial arts, the focus is on self-improvement so there is no pressure of “letting the team down.” This can go a long way to help building self-confidence.

They work toward specific goals.

Some children who learn and think differently feel like they never “win” at anything. In martial arts, everyone works & progresses at their own pace. They earn a different coloured belt through hard work, commitment and developing their skills. This can boost self-esteem and keep them motivated.

Routines are broken down into chunks.

Techniques & combinations in martial arts can have dozens of different movements. But children learn gradually, repeating and adding steps as they go. They learn to anticipate which step comes next. And eventually, they put everything together into fluid movements.

They emphasise self-control and concentration.

Children have to stay focused in their martial arts classes. When a child’s focus drifts, our instructors use ‘focus anchors’ to help them refocus. This lets them reset their concentration and get ready for what’s next.

They help with motor skill development.

Doing martial arts combinations can help children get a better feel for their body in space. This is good for children who struggle with balance, coordination, and other motor skills. It also helps children understand the power of the mind over the body, which is key in helping them develop good self-control.

They provide a supportive, structured environment.

Our AEGIS Martial Arts Instructors have clear rules and constantly reinforce them. They also emphasise good behaviour & setting a black belt leadership example in and out of class.

They’re a safe way for children to get out extra energy.

It’s a myth that martial arts encourage violent behaviour. In fact, we emphasise that fighting is a last resort. At the same time, the physical aspects of martial arts training like pad work let children work out frustration or anger while practicing self-control.

It’s an accepting environment.

Respect is a core value in martial arts. Children are taught to show respect to their instructor, their parents, and their fellow students. To maintain a positive environment for all, bullying and negative behaviour to others is not tolerated in class, and students are encouraged to support each other.

They’re cool!

Children who learn and think differently sometimes feel awkward or out of the loop. But lots of children think martial arts are cool. It’s hard not to feel special when you’re wearing a martial arts uniform & performing exciting martial arts techniques.

As you can see, there are plenty of ways in which your child could benefit from Martial Arts training. And its very easy to find out more!
